Understanding the basics of sleep and sleep disorders is the first step to becoming involved with the recognition and also the management of sleep disorders, and in particular sleep breathing disorders. Sleep is a unique behavioral state and is not simply an altered state of consciousness. The dentist will see many patients on a daily basis who are at risk for a sleep disorder. Being able to understand them can have a major impact on ones quality of life. In addition there are many health and medically related conditions that are co-morbid to sleep disorders. Being aware of these may also reveal a patient who is at risk for a sleep disorder. In the end improvement in sleep may lead to an overall improvement in health.
